AUTHOR: Belinda McKeon |
Belinda's debut novel Solace was a number one Irish bestseller and won the 2012 Faber Prize, as well as being named Sunday Independent Best Newcomer and Irish Book of the Year. She teaches on the creative writing faculty at Barnard College, New York and lives in Brooklyn, where she is currently at work on her second novel. Belinda will talk about the writing process, the experience of being published, and about the queasy ground between the two: what matters when you're writing with the hope of being published; what publication looks like from the author's point of view, and why the old writing tip "murder your darlings" today becomes "murder your twitter followers" (not necessarily literally).

LITERARY AGENT: Sheila Crowley (Nominated as Agent of the Year 2013 ) |
Sheila started her publishing career at Poolbeg Press, before moving to London in 1991, where she worked at a number of leading publishers, including Harper Collins and Hodder. During the 1990s and early ‘00s she held a number of high profile sales and marketing positions and worked closely with many authors and agents. This was her inspiration to change to ‘the other side’ and in 2003 she became a literary agent. She worked at APWatt for five years before moving to Curtis Brown, the biggest Literary Agency in the UK. Sheila represents a wide range of authors and she specialises in quality fiction, crime and thrillers, memoir, business, sport and MBS. Her broad knowledge of the book industry in the UK, Ireland and international markets is very beneficial as publishing is in transition. Sheila’s Client list includes Jojo Moyes, Melissa Hill, Santa Montefiore, Colette Caddle, Emma Hannigan, Sarah Harte, Declan Hughes, Rachel Hore, and Professor Mark Williams. Sheila will be discussing the UK, Irish and US Markets from an Agent’s point of view; what the agent is currently looking for; as well as an overview of Curtis Brown, one of the biggest agencies in the UK. |

PUBLISHER: Brendan Barrington |
Brendan is Editor at Penguin Ireland as well as The Dublin Review. He will talk about what editors and publishers do; about what is changing in book publishing and (perhaps more importantly) what hasn’t really changed; about why editors are much more interested in new writers than you might think; about why it is a good idea for unpublished writers to educate themselves about how publishing works; and about why unpublished writers should not spend TOO much time worrying about the market. |
