After Crossing the Border: The Act of Translation in Literature, Life and Mind

6.30–9.00pm

Free admission

In today's globalized society translation is everywhere, be it linguistic, cultural, coded. How is this border crossed? How do we deal with the translation of culture and how do we accept it? Is translation an academic exercise, or does it serve a purpose on all levels of communication? Is it creative or functional? How does translation help us, and why is it important?

This event is hosted by the Trinity Journal of Literary Translation (T-JoLT) in partnership with the Irish Writers' Centre; T-JoLT is an an academic, student-run journal which seeks to publish works of literary translation from any language into English or Irish. Our panel discussion, chaired by T-JoLT's Editor-in-Chief Aine Josephine Tyrrell and will be followed by a Q&A session after the debate. Following the event tea and coffee will be served from 8.00-9.00pm. The panel includes Dr. Peter Arnds, lecturer of the MPhil in Literary Translation at TCD; John Kearns, editor of Translation Ireland; Dr. Borbála Faragó teaching professor at St. Patrick's College; Dr. Nick Johnson, assistant professor of drama at TCD; and Elizabeth McSkeane, a Scottish-born translator and writer of poetry and fiction based in Dublin.

A Celebration in Memory of Dorothy Molloy
Free admission

Irish Writers Centre: 6.30. Wednesday the 3rd of December. Ten years after the death of Dorothy Molloy and the posthumous publication of 'Hare Soup', followed by 'Gethsemane Day' and 'Long Distance Swimmer', friends, fans, and the uninitiated are invited to an evening at The Irish Writers Centre. Join us in a celebration of her work and to honour this great Irish poet. Please come and read your favourite Molloy poem, share your thoughts or sit back, listen and simply enjoy the occasion with a complimentary glass of wine.

"Coming at the same moment as the shocking news of Dorothy Molloy's death, her first collection of poems has the impact of an Atlantic wave, a sense of piled and travelled force bend it." Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, Irish Times, April 2004

The event has kindly been organised by Nuala Leonard and Louise C.Callaghan. Any inquiries should be directed to nualaleonard@yahoo.com.
